Boating Safety Checklist
Boating Safety Checklist Annually, Memorial Day marks the traditional beginning of the boating season. Before hitting the water, we would like to offer a boating safety checklist that will help make your time on the water as safe and as fun as possible. Whether you are heading to a major waterway or a small lake, it’s important to follow a safety checklist. Courtesy of your Ohio watercraft insurance agency, follow this boating safety checklist. 1. Life Jackets: You’re required to carry one life jacket per person on all boats. Their main function is to provide flotation keeping a boater's head above water. 2. Cell Phone: A cell phone is an invaluable piece of equipment to bring on your boat. Most are equipped to send text messaging, emails, phone calls, etc. in case of an emergency. Be sure to keep them in a waterproof bag that floats. 3. GPS: A GPS is available as a console-mounted version and a handled version. Through a GPS you can pinpoint your location within a close vicinity. 4. VHF Radio: Similar to a GPS, they are available in hand-held and fixed-mount options. They can keep you posted on possible weather situations. 5. Gas: It’s important to keep spare gas on your boat just in case. Keep in mind that fuel can go bad, specifically if you notice a strong ethanol smell. 6. Flares: If you are stranded or in an emergency, flares can be among the most visible of all signaling devices, particularly the ones that can be fired into the air. 7. Boat Registration: Remember that like your car, both the boat and trailer need to have current registration. Make sure both are up to date and in your possession. 8. Boating Safety Course: It’s never a bad idea to take a boating safety course. This is a good idea for a new boater or an experienced one. Typically you find a course in your area for free or a very minimal fee. Keep in mind that Roselius Insurance Agency offers Ohio boat insurance with several of our carriers.
